Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), criticized and praised Elon Musk during a podcast appearance.
The ADL and Musk have had a contentious relationship in the past, with Musk threatening legal action against the group.
“We are living in perilous times, and that’s why it was so deeply problematic and dangerous when the owner of X validated an awful anti-Semitic conspiracy theory to his 160 million followers or so and that’s why I called that out right away when that happened,” Greenblatt said.
“Then two days later, it’s important that he made a good policy decision and announced that he was no longer going to tolerate language, genocidal language, that called to eradicate the state of Israel.”
“I don’t think one negates the other. I don’t want to give you the wrong impression.”
“I’m not saying, ‘Oh, he’s off the hook because he said this on Friday’ or ‘Oh, he’ll always be bad because he said this on Wednesday.’”
“It’s my job to call it as I see it,” Greenblatt said.
Musk announced a ban on certain language on X, drawing praise from Greenblatt, who defended his position against critics.
Greenblatt emphasized the importance of calling out problematic behavior while also acknowledging positive actions.
