The White House stated that while the average cost of a Thanksgiving meal has decreased slightly from the record high in 2022, it remains significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels.
The American Farm Bureau Federation reported that the 2023 average cost for a Thanksgiving meal for ten people is $61.17, down 4.5% from 2022 but is up 14.7% from 2021 and 25% from 2019.
The decrease in cost year-over-year is primarily due to lower turkey prices, attributed to a decrease in avian influenza cases.

“Given its prominence, the turkey is the true driver of Thanksgiving dinner prices,” AFBF noted.
“This year’s drop in turkey prices is attributable to a decrease of avian influenza cases and the resulting recovery in the turkey flock.”
Regional variations in prices were also noted, with the west coast and northeast having higher average costs than the south and midwest.
The AFBF emphasized that while prices have started to decrease, food price inflation remains a significant concern for U.S. consumers.
