Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed legislation to withdraw Russia from the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), a nuclear weapons treaty signed in 1996 and ratified in 2000.

The move is seen as a seeking of equality with Western powers, as the US signed the treaty but failed to ratify it.

Other countries, including China, Israel, Iran, and North Korea, also failed finalize their commitment to the treaty.

Putin had indicated his intention to withdraw from the treaty following his invasion of Ukraine.

Russia conducted a military exercise simulating a nuclear strike last month, involving practice launches of ballistic and cruise missiles.

Moscow stated that it will only resume nuclear tests if the US does so first.
