Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk admitted in an interview that the tunnels built underneath Gaza are meant to protect Hamas terrorists from Israeli airstrikes, not to provide shelter for Palestinian civilians.
The remarks were made after a recent terrorist attack by Hamas that resulted in the deaths of 1,400 Israelis and the kidnapping of over 200 people.
Marzouk stated that the tunnels are necessary for their protection and that it is the responsibility of the United Nations and the occupying forces to provide services for the refugees in Gaza.

“We have built the tunnels because we have no other way of protecting ourselves from being targeted and killed,” Marzouk told the media.
“These tunnels are meant to protect us from the airplanes. We are fighting from inside the tunnels.” added the Hamas official.
Marzouk claimed that “Everybody knows that 75% of the people in the Gaza Strip are refugees, and it is the responsibility of the United Nations to protect them.”
Adding, “According to the Geneva Convention, it is the responsibility of the occupation to provide them with all the services as long as they are under occupation.”
Hamas has been criticized for placing their tunnels near civilian infrastructure, such as churches, schools, and hospitals.
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh called for Palestinian civilians to die in Israeli strikes, believing it would help Hamas defeat Israel.
“I call on everybody – all the free people of the world, all the friendly countries, all the brotherly [Arab] countries, and all the allies – to exert all the necessary pressure, in all directions and in all forums, in order to end the aggression against Gaza, to stop this war against our children, women, and elderly, our mosques, our universities, and our homes,” said Haniyeh to the Palestinian civilians.
The Hamas leader continued, “This brutal aggression must stop. This new holocaust must stop.”
