Cate Blanchett faced criticism for claiming she is “middle class” while discussing her role in a new film at Cannes, given that she has a reported net worth of $95 million from her successful acting career.
While lamenting her “white privilege” and work with refugees, Blanchett made the claim, puzzling fans online who noted her multi-million dollar property holdings.
“I’m white, I’m privileged, I’m middle class and I think one can be accused of having a bit of a white savior complex,” she said.
I beg your pardon.
Middle class? Cate is worth $95 million. Is that considered middle class now? pic.twitter.com/j1QMsS8Hb6

“But to be perfectly honest, my interaction with refugees in the field and also in resettled environments has totally changed my perspective on the world, and I’m utterly grateful for that,” she said.
Some defended her by saying celebrities may see classes differently in the UK context versus Americans.
But others slammed her as being out of touch with reality given her vast wealth, highlighting the bubble that wealthy celebrities can reside in disconnecting them from ordinary socioeconomic realities.
“Cate Blanchett thinks she’s ‘middle class’ compared to who? Jeff Bezos? Rich people are so out of touch,” one X user wrote.
The comment renewed debate about how those in the one percent might perceive their own status.
