The Fulton County District Attorney leading the election interference case against Donald Trump skipped a debate for her Democratic primary re-election bid.
Her challenger, Christian Wise Smith, debated alone and called on the incumbent DA Fani Willis to reschedule.
“We understand that she cannot insist that panelists and her opponent avoid certain subjects, and consequently, her participation means likely repeatedly being unable to respond to questions, as well as risking saying something that defense counsel could make an issue in ongoing litigation,” a statement read.

“There is no reason we can’t reschedule the debate,” Smith said. “We are happy to work with her team to do it.”
Willis said she would not discuss ongoing high-profile cases like the Trump matter.
A recent poll showed Willis with strong support ahead of the May 21 primary, indicating controversy over her former prosecutor resigning due to an improper relationship has not hurt her campaign.
A Republican and independent candidate are also running to replace Willis as DA.
Willis is moving forward with the Trump case despite defense efforts to dismiss it after the special prosecutor’s resignation.
Trump has denied wrongdoing while calling the investigations politically motivated.
