Second presidential term
Staff writer Eric Cortellessa of Time Magazine has posed challenging questions to Donald Trump regarding his and his supporters’ actions during his quest for a second presidential term, including the possibility of violence.
Trump’s vision
Cortellessa described Trump’s vision as “transformative” and referenced former White House strategist Stephen Bannon’s view that Trump perceives the country’s current state in an “apocalyptic” manner.
Political violence
“These obsessions could once again push the nation to the brink of crisis,” TIME wrote. “Trump does not dismiss the possibility of political violence around the election.”
Fairness
“If we don’t win, you know, it depends,” Trump said. “It always depends on the fairness of the election.” Following the Capitol Riot on January 6, 2021, where Trump supporters breached the Capitol to disrupt election certification, the incident has cast a shadow over the former president.
Federal charges
Despite being impeached for inciting an insurrection, he was acquitted in the U.S. Senate. Currently, he faces federal charges linked to attempts to overturn the 2020 election and the ensuing Capitol riot.
Bold claims
In a recent interview, Trump made bold claims about his plans for a second term, including using the military to expel millions of undocumented immigrants from the U.S.
Evan Gershkovich
Additionally, he asserted that he would secure the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich from Russia, where he has been detained for over a year on questionable espionage charges, if President Biden failed to do so.
Biden administration
The Biden administration responded by appreciating Trump’s assistance in bringing the journalist back home.
Evan’s freedom
“President Biden has worked ceaselessly for Evan’s freedom since he was unjustifiably imprisoned by Putin, as well as for the freedom of fellow American Paul Whelan, who has now spent 5 years in a Russia prison,” spokesman Andrew Bates told Fox News Digital.
Immediate release
He continued, “Like the President said on Saturday when he repeated his call for Evan’s immediate release, journalism is not a crime and reporters are not enemies of the people, but, instead, critical to democracy. President Biden welcomes this new support for bringing Evan back from Russia, and he will continue to demand both Evan and Paul’s release.”
