Amy Schumer
In a recent interview, comedian Amy Schumer highlighted that Hamas has avoided the same level of scrutiny that Jewish people have faced following Israel’s conflict in Gaza.
Proud Jewish woman
The actress, who identifies as a “proud Jewish woman”, expressed to the entertainment publication Variety that she perceives Jewish individuals to face significantly more criticism in the “public discourse” compared to the Gaza-based terror group.
Disrespect
She further asserted that supporting Israel is often viewed as a form of disrespect towards Palestinians by a significant portion of society. During the interview, Schumer mentioned that she is accustomed to being a focal point for controversy due to her style of comedy and her vocal advocacy of liberal political perspectives.
Criticism
She shared with the publication the instances of criticism she has faced recently for her pro-Israel positions, including being heckled while filming her upcoming movie, “Kinda Pregnant.” “A stranger yelled at her while she was filming a scene, “‘You’re a Zionist! You love genocide!’”
Critiquing
“It didn’t even raise my heart rate,” Schumer said. “I didn’t cry. Nothing.” She observed that in the current public dialogue, there is a greater emphasis on examining and critiquing “Jewish people” compared to Hamas, the group responsible for the October 7 terrorist attack on Israel, and its supporters.
Very strange
“The focus is so razor-sharp on Jewish people but not on Hamas,” she said. “It’s very strange.” She suggested a book for people to read in order to gain a deeper understanding of the subject.
Misunderstood
“So I’d recommend people read a book — ‘Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth’ by Noa Tishby. Or anything — Jewish people wrote everything down.” Schumer, set to appear in Jerry Seinfeld’s upcoming Netflix comedy “Unfrosted,” expressed to the publication her belief that advocating for Israel’s interests is seen as offensive by those who support Palestine.
Can’t speak up
The comedian mentioned that she does critique the Israeli government for its actions during the conflict in Gaza saying, “It’s gotten to this place where you can’t speak up for other Jews without people feeling like it’s a slight to the conditions in Gaza.”
Netanyahu
“I don’t agree with anything that [Benjamin] Netanyahu is doing, and neither do the Israelis I know. Of course, what’s going on in Gaza is sickening, horrifying and unthinkable. And, I don’t think it’s OK to hate anyone because they were born Jewish.”
Backlash
Shortly after the October 7 attack, Schumer commented on the backlash she faced for supporting Israel, expressing on Instagram that she was “sad to have lost so many friends these last few weeks.”
Powerful and free
Nevertheless, she expressed her sentiment saying she felt “powerful and free knowing I stand for the truth and will fight for it always.”
Head high
“I’m a proud Jewish woman and have every right to be. Head high. Spirits high. Love to my fellow brothers and sisters,” she said at the time.
Chuck Schumer
Schumer is distantly related to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer from New York, being his second cousin once removed.
