Rep. Gerry Connolly asserted the US-Ukraine border was America’s border as he advocated for a $61 billion Ukraine aid bill in the House.
Republicans criticized this claim as geographically ridiculous.
“Some say, ‘Well, we have to deal with our border first,’” Connolly said. “The Ukrainian Russian border is our border!”

While Connolly said the US had a stake in preventing autocracy from spreading on that border, Republicans noted the majority of their caucus opposed the aid.
“The America Last Uniparty in a nutshell,” Rep. Andrew Clyde said.
“It’s the border between depraved autocracy and freedom-loving people seeking our democratic way of life,” Connolly said. “Do we have a stake in that outcome? Yes, undeniably yes.”
Speaker Mike Johnson broke with most Republicans again by supporting the bill after meeting with Biden and changing his stance on Ukraine aid.
Connolly voted for Ukraine aid but against securing America’s actual southern border, prioritizing one border over another in Republicans’ view.
