Tesla has reportedly settled a lawsuit filed by the family of Walter Huang, an Apple engineer who died in a 2018 crash involving Tesla’s Autopilot technology.
Huang was killed when his Model X SUV veered into a highway barrier going 75 mph with Autopilot engaged.
Investigators found Huang had been playing a video game on his phone before the crash.
Huang’s widow sued Tesla in 2019, alleging the vehicle lacked adequate safety features.
As the case was set to go to trial, court filings revealed Tesla had reached a confidential settlement with the Huang family.
Tesla data indicated Autopilot had previously steered Huang’s vehicle left at the crash site.
While Huang corrected it, Tesla claimed he was increasingly relying on Autopilot with hands off the wheel, termed “extraordinary misuse.”
The settlement avoids further litigation for Tesla over its automated driving systems and role in human error.
