On The View, Sunny Hostin commented that recent events like solar eclipses, earthquakes, and emerging broods of cicadas that emerge periodically could lead one to believe in climate change.
Hostin recounted a makeup artist who was spooked by the recent earthquake, thinking it was a sign of the rapture along with the solar eclipse.
“I know, right? I have to say, one of our wonderful makeup artists…when the earthquake was happening, she put her coat on and she was, like, Jesus is coming. I’m out. I’m leaving. We got a solar eclipse. We’ve got an earthquake. She ran down the hallway,” Hostin said.
“The Rapture is here!” Alyssa Farah Griffin said.
“The Rapture is here. Also, I learned that the cica-ah-das are coming,” Hostin said.
“Cicadas?” Whoopi Goldberg said.
While Hostin said the cicadas emergence was the first time in many years, Whoopi Goldberg corrected that different cicada broods emerge on a 17-year cycle.
“For the first time in a hundred years,” Hostin said.
“No, no, no, no. There’s two different kinds coming. There’s two different kinds of cicadas coming,” Goldberg said.
“The good cicadas and the bad cicadas,” Joy Behar said.
“This is for the first time in many, many years,” Hostin said.
“No, every 17 years this happens,” Goldberg said.
“That’s not what I read, but maybe, you know, maybe you know better,” Hostin said.
“In a way,” Goldberg said.
Hostin said all these events together could indicate climate change, but Joy Behar noted earthquakes are unrelated to the surface climate.
“All those things together, would maybe lead one to believe that either climate change exists, or something is really going on,” Hostin said.
“Earthquakes are not at the mercy of climate change. It’s underground,” Behar said.
Goldberg further explained eclipses can be predicted, so using them as signs from God is questionable since warnings aren’t God’s style based on past examples like the Tower of Babel story.
“The eclipse, and they’ve known about the eclipse coming because eclipses happen and they actually can say when these things are going to happen. So all these folks who are saying, you know, it’s a sign from God — God doesn’t give you warning. Ok? You think he gave people at the Tower of Babble a warning? ‘Oh, I’m about to jack y’all up?’ No. God does stuff and then you figure, oh,” Goldberg said.
