President Biden has expanded Temporary Protected Status (TPS) eligibility and receipt to nearly 1.2 million foreign nationals, making them unable to be deported.

Since taking office, Biden’s administration has added several countries to the TPS list, most notably extending protections to almost half a million Venezuelans in 2021.

This expansion of TPS eligibility, along with overall immigration trends, have contributed to the foreign-born population in the US reaching a record high of over 51 million according to estimates, far surpassing previous levels going back to 1970.

“The foreign-born share of the U.S. population has more than tripled since 1970, nearly doubled since 1990, and is up 40 percent just since 2000,” CIS researchers wrote.

“Since President Biden took office in January 2021, the foreign-born population has grown by 6.4 million — larger than the individual populations of 33 states.”
