Donald Trump set to Sue Letitia James
A Fox News contributor argued that Donald Trump has grounds to sue New York Attorney General Letitia James for civil rights violations based on comments she made while campaigning in 2018. A New York court had delayed Trump paying a $454 million civil fraud penalty from James’ lawsuit and instructed him to pay a $175 million bond while appealing.
Sue her
Political analyst Deroy Murdock said, “Now, you could talk about stale ideas, that’s fine, but too male and too pale, that constitutes, basically, sex and race discrimination. So I think what President Trump ought to do is sue her on the basis of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.”
Discrimination
The contributor said James’ past comments about the Trump administration being “too male, too pale, and too stale” constituted discrimination based on sex and race under the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Federal money
“Her office gets federal money for various subsidies for law enforcement activity. So federal money is flowing into her office and if she is engaged in that kind of sexual and racial discrimination and that kind of language, I think she’s wide open to exposure on the 1964 Civil Rights Act,” Murdock said.
James’ office
As James’ office receives federal funding, the contributor maintained Trump should sue under that Act.
Politically motivated
Trump has also accused James of a politically motivated racist investigation. “Donald J. Trump should sue Letitia James on the basis of Civil Rights,” Murdock added.
Federal complaint
“He immediately should file a federal complaint and demand justice under America’s keystone civil-rights law. To see a white male multi-billionaire sue a [Black] female attorney general to secure his civil rights would be the ultimate man-bites-dog story,” Murdock wrote.
Extraordinary
“For this extraordinary spectacle, America owes a hearty thank you to New York state’s leading despot, Attorney General Letitia James.” A lawyer for Trump celebrated reducing the bond in the civil fraud case, criticizing James and saying they would serve her “humble pie.”
Humble pie
“I hope she took a little piece of humble pie today because that’s what was served to her, just a little, but we’ll be serving a lot more of that in the next couple of years,” attorney Alina Habba said.
Accountability
“Donald Trump is still facing accountability for his staggering fraud,” AG James stated. “The court has already found that he engaged in years of fraud to falsely inflate his net worth and unjustly enrich himself, his family, and his organization. The $464 million judgment—plus interest—against Donald Trump and the other defendants still stands.”
Fraud finding
While the lowered bond did not change the underlying fraud finding, it potentially spared Trump financial disaster and losing control over his properties if he could not pay the full original bond amount.
Trump’s bond
After the reduction of Trump’s bond payment, he said, “Thank you to professor Jonathan Turley for exposing the horrendous decision made by a corrupt New York State Judge, Arthur Engoron, on the ‘I will get Trump’ worst in the Nation A.G., Letitia James, unfair case against me,” Trump wrote.
175,000,000 Bond
“I just posted a $175,000,000 Bond just for the right to Appeal this travesty of a case, which I won at the Appellate Division, but this Judge refuses to accept- A FIRST,” he wrote.
Whacked out nut job
“He is a whacked out nut job who just made up a number out of thin air, just like he did on the value of Mar-a-Lago. Businesses won’t enter New York because of this decision, and many are fleeing. Think of it – I had to pay an enormous sum for the right to Appeal the ridiculous decision of a CROOKED Judge and A.G.”
Election Interference
“This is Election Interference, and it all comes directly from Joe Biden and the White House,” he wrote. “An attack, along with ALL OF THE OTHERS, on his political opponent, ME!”
Freeze Trump’s bank
Prior reporting from the New York Times and CNN gleefully outlined steps that could be taken to freeze Trump’s bank accounts and seize properties, with CNN calling it a focus. Both outlets were surprised by the appeals court’s decision to lower the bond.
Aggressive
“But if she wanted to take a more aggressive stance, Ms. James could freeze some of Mr. Trump’s bank accounts, which might send the Trump family business into a tailspin,” the Times’ Kate Christobek and Ben Protess wrote.
New York properties
“She could also seek to seize some of his New York properties, and public records show that Ms. James has formally posted the judgment in Westchester County, a preliminary step toward staking a claim to Mr. Trump’s private estate and golf club there,” they added. “Assets, such as buildings, houses, cars, helicopters and his plane, are in play,” CNN’s “law enforcement reporter” Mark Morales said.
Main focus
“The main focus could be on his bank accounts, which experts say will be easier to take hold of, and properties, which would be more difficult,” he added. Critics noted that liberal media lives in an echo chamber of Trump derangement and should be surprised by any outcomes benefiting the former president.
