The NHS in England announced it will no longer prescribe puberty blockers to children after an evidence review found safety concerns.
The review by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence was prompted by a large uptick in children referred to a gender clinic, from 250 in 2012 to over 5,000 in 2022.
“NHS England has carefully considered the evidence review conducted by NICE (2020) and has identified and reviewed any further published evidence available to date,” read an NHS England policy document. “We have concluded that there is not enough evidence to support the safety or clinical effectiveness of PSH to make the treatment routinely available at this time.”
Few children already receiving puberty blockers will be allowed to continue with monitoring, but moving forward no children will be prescribed the drugs through the NHS.
This follows a previous announcement that puberty blockers for minors were being blocked due to evidence that gender dysphoria often co-occurs with other developmental issues.
“A significant proportion of children and young people who are concerned about, or distressed by, issues of gender incongruence experience coexisting mental health, neuro-developmental and/or personal, family or social complexities in their lives,” the policy guidance states. “The relationship between these presentations and gender incongruence may not be readily apparent and will often require careful exploration.”
The NHS concluded there was not enough evidence to support the safety or effectiveness of puberty blockers to make them routinely available.
