At a House hearing, FBI Director Christopher Wray refused to tell Rep. Elise Stefanik whether the FBI has opened any counterintelligence investigations into President Biden or former President Trump.
Stefanik cited requirements that Congress be notified of such investigations into federal candidates.
“There is no investigation that I could confirm here, no,” Wray said.

“Is there a counterintelligence investigation?” Stefanik asked.
“Again, I’m not confirming any investigation into either candidate,” Wray said.
“Are you aware that you’re required by the IAA to notify Congress of any counterintelligence investigation?” Stefanik asked.
When pressed, Wray would only say the FBI is “in compliance with the law” but did not confirm or deny any investigations. (Trending: New Bombshell FBI Docs Blow Trump Case Wide Open)
He said he could not discuss counterintelligence matters in an open hearing.
“And we will comply with the law,” Wray said.
“Have you already complied with the law? Has there been a notification?” Stefanik asked.
“I believe we have been in compliance with the law,” Wray said.
Stefanik asked if he would confirm in a classified hearing later that day, to which Wray only replied the FBI would comply with the law.
“You believe you have been or has there been a notification to Congress of any counterintelligence investigation of a federal candidate?” Stefanik asked.
“I believe we have complied with the law,” Wray said.
During the extended exchange, Stefanik also questioned Wray on Special Counsel Hur’s Biden documents probe, the Mar-a-Lago raid, and security risks of campaigns using TikTok.
But Wray did not confirm or provide details on any counterintelligence investigations.
Wray said he is “not in the business of confirming, especially not at open hearing assessments or anything like that when it comes to counterintelligence matters.”
