Olivia Rodrigo’s concerts had offered free contraceptives including condoms, lubrication, and Plan B pills to fans through partnerships with abortion funds.
However, this was reversed after widespread media attention. Sources from abortion funds said Rodrigo’s team relayed the decision was made because “children are present at the concerts.”
“The reality is that youth have sex, and youth need access to birth control and emergency contraception,” DC Abortion Fund communications manager Jade Hurley said. “What we’re doing is completely legal in all 50 states.”
While youth need access to such resources, the singer’s team now preferred they not be distributed.
Rodrigo had donated tour money to pro-abortion groups and handed out Plan B pills to fans, including in St. Louis after Roe v. Wade was overturned.
“I’m devastated and terrified that so many women and so many girls are going to die because of this,” Rodrigo said at the time.
Rodrigo has sought to make abortion a central part of her public image and assailed the Supreme Court decision.
Offering the free contraceptives drew negative publicity, however, forcing the reversal despite arguments that youth need such access.
