California Governor Gavin Newsom echoed President Biden’s calls for national gun control laws during the State of the Union address, despite such policies having failed to curb mass shootings in California for over 30 years.
California has banned “assault weapons” since 1989 and required universal background checks since 1991, yet the state has experienced numerous high-profile mass shootings over the years that resulted in numerous deaths.
These include the Santa Barbara, San Bernardino, Yountville Veterans Home, Thousand Oaks, Orange, Sacramento, Goshen, Monterey Park, and Half Moon Bay shootings.
We need a national ban on assault weapons.
We need universal background checks.
We also need to raise the age to purchase a gun to 21 and have a standard waiting period.@POTUS is right.

A report noted mass shootings injuring or killing at least four people have begun occurring every six days in California in 2023.
Nevertheless, Newsom advocated for an “assault weapons” ban, universal background checks, and waiting periods nationally, even though California already has these laws yet they have proven ineffective at preventing mass shootings according to the state’s history of such incidents.
