Senator Bernie Sanders introduced legislation to reduce the standard US workweek from 40 hours to 32 hours.

His bill would mandate overtime pay for any hours worked over 32 in a week.

Sanders argued that while technology has increased worker productivity, wages and hours worked have not improved for most Americans.

The legislation aims to ensure the benefits of new technologies go to workers rather than just corporate executives and shareholders.

While Sanders led a hearing on the bill, some Republican senators expressed opposition, arguing it could harm small businesses and lead to layoffs if companies cannot maintain productivity levels.

“The financial gains from the major advancements in artificial intelligence, automation, and new technology must benefit the working class, not just corporate CEOs and wealthy stockholders on Wall Street,” Sanders wrote.

Recent experiments testing shorter workweeks have found lower stress and burnout alongside higher productivity and well-being.

France adopted a 35-hour workweek in 2000 and may further reduce it to 32 hours. Most American workers surveyed expressed interest in a four-day workweek.
