An explosion during a training exercise at an FBI facility in Irvine, California injured 16 sheriff’s department officers.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team was conducting their annual training with the bomb squad at the FBI-operated Jerry Crowe Regional Tactical Training Facility when the indoor blast occurred.
One officer suffered leg injuries requiring surgery while others had back or leg wounds not requiring surgery.
Thirteen more reported dizziness and ringing in their ears, with most treated and released from hospitals.
The FBI said they were merely providing the training facility and had nothing to do with the explosion.
“A training incident that occurred today at the FBI’s training facility in Irvine with law enforcement partners resulted in some injuries and is under investigation,” the FBI stated.
Investigators are examining the scene and debris as the cause remains unclear, with an investigation launched.
