Vice President Kamala Harris is convening a discussion at the White House on criminal justice reform involving rapper Fat Joe and individuals pardoned for marijuana convictions.

The event comes as the Biden administration faces pressure to make progress on reforming the criminal system and easing drug laws, which disproportionately impact people of color.

While Biden has taken some steps like pardoning thousands for marijuana possession and recommending reclassifying cannabis under federal law, activists want bolder action like legalization.

Harris is tasked with rallying key constituencies like young voters and communities of color ahead of the midterms, but the administration has disappointed some liberals by not achieving more sweeping reforms and distancing itself from sharply cutting penalties.

The discussion will focus on issues of racial equity and disproportionate incarceration for drug offenses in the U.S.
