Curtis Bashaw, a Never Trump Republican and donor to Democrats, is challenging pro-Trump candidate Christine Serrano Glassner for the Republican nomination to take on Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez in New Jersey.
Bashaw previously opposed Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and donated to Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson instead.
He has also donated to moderate Republicans like Chris Christie and Democrats like Joe Manchin.
A timely letter from a diverse group declaring that liberal democracy cannot survive without free expression. That the best path for change is persuasion, not coercion. And that robust discourse is essential. Freedom is messy but precious. @Harpers https://t.co/L8qqclvCKd

Glassner has criticized Bashaw for past business dealings with a Chinese state-owned construction firm tied to the Chinese military, though Bashaw claims to have divested in 2019.
Bashaw “is not only a Democrat in Republican clothing, but also has partnered with and financially benefited from Chinese firms that scoop up American real estate,” Glassner wrote.
Glassner said that Menendez’s corruption and weak Democratic opponents could make the New Jersey Senate seat winnable for Republicans.
