Vice President Kamala Harris distinguished between the Israeli government and people in an interview, implying Israel is not democratic and its citizens disagree with the elected government’s conduct of the war in Gaza.
Harris was asked about ending military aid to Israel over 30,000 Palestinian deaths.
“It’s important for us to distinguish or at least not conflate the Israeli government with the Israeli people,” she said.
However, Israelis broadly support Netanyahu’s handling of the war according to polls.
Israelis also oppose the Biden administration’s vision for the region like a two-state solution based on recent elections and surveys showing a majority do not want a Palestinian state.
Harris’ response reflects the Biden administration’s enduring hostility toward Netanyahu despite his representation of most Israeli citizens’ views on the conflict.
