The U.S. Army dispatched its largest logistics vessel, the General Frank S. Besson, to the Eastern Mediterranean to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The ship is carrying equipment to construct a temporary pier off the Gaza coast to bypass Hamas restrictions and enable the flow of aid and reconstruction supplies into Gaza by sea.

Up to 1,000 U.S. troops would build the pier over 60 days without entering Gaza. The EU, U.S., UAE and others back the sea corridor, with the UN and Red Cross overseeing aid distribution.

Some details around U.S. involvement remain unclear.

Israel has said it does not limit aid entering Gaza but that distribution is hampered by Hamas stealing supplies and UN capacity issues.

A Spanish aid ship planned to test the sea route from Cyprus once approved. Israel welcomed the plan and said it would inspect Gaza-bound cargo in Cyprus.
