Senator Mitt Romney defended Senator Katie Britt against criticism of her oddly delivered State of the Union rebuttal by arguing the “media overreaction” showed liberals see her as a feared potential VP nominee.

Britt’s speech was panned across the political spectrum for its breathy, abrupt style and tone that failed to resonate.

“In a good way, the delivery was over-the-top, out of character — Biden’s, of course. Katie Britt’s too,” Romney wrote on X. “The media’s overreaction to hers, not his, tells us who liberals most fear as VP nominee.”

Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk said it was “not what we need” to counter Biden declaring war on the right.

“I’m sure Katie Britt is a sweet mom and person, but this speech is not what we need,” Kirk wrote on X. “Joe Biden just declared war on the American right and Katie Britt is talking like she’s hosting a cooking show whispering about how Democrats ‘dont get it.’”

While Romney backed Britt’s viability, her late endorsement of Trump in comparison to colleagues could hurt chances of being considered for vice president despite the rebuttal bringing her attention, as Trump allies will factor in loyalty as a top criterion.

“I think we’re quite a ways away, though, from seeing anything,” Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller said.
