United Airlines faced two major incidents in the same week involving flight safety issues.
On Thursday, a tire fell off a United Boeing 777 landing in Los Angeles, damaging cars at the airport after the plane safely landed with 249 people onboard.
“United flight 1118 returned to Houston shortly after takeoff due to an engine issue,” the airline stated. “The flight landed safely, and the passengers deplaned normally. We arranged for a new aircraft to take our customers to their destination, which departed for Fort Myers later that evening.”

Earlier in the week on Monday, United flight 1118 from Houston to Fort Myers had to turn around less than 15 minutes after takeoff due to an engine erupting in flames.
Passengers reported seeing a bright flash and fire out the window, then chaos aboard as people screamed and cried in fear of their lives.
“I remember there was just this bright, flashing light that came through the window, and it sounded like a bomb went off, and then it was just a strobe of fire out the window,” one passenger said. “And then it just turned into chaos. People were screaming and crying and trying to figure out what was going on.”
One passenger emailed his wife he loved her, thinking they would die.
The plane landed safely and passengers were given meal vouchers and $200 travel credit for the traumatic experience.
The incidents underscore the airlines’ responsibility for passenger safety and dealing with emergencies, as United had two issues within a week affecting hundreds of customers.
