During his State of the Union address, President Biden appeared to threaten the Supreme Court over the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade, saying “justices, you’re about to realize just how much” women have political power, before being drowned out by Democratic cheers.
His comments came as the Supreme Court is set to make rulings that could impact Special Counsel Jack Smith’s January 6 case against Trump by ending presidential immunity claims or invalidating the obstruction charges used against many protesters.
“And with all due respect, justices, women are not without electoral power. Excuse me, electoral or political power,” Biden said. “You’re about to realize just how much you,” he said as Democrats applauded loudly.
Democrats have made clear they want Trump convicted before 2024.
Elsewhere in the speech, Biden again portrayed political opponents as a “threat to democracy,” calling the January 6 riot the biggest threat since the Civil War, despite it being a minor event.
“Years ago on January 6, when insurrections stormed this very Capitol and placed a dagger at the throat of American democracy. Many of you were here on that darkest of days. We all saw with our own eyes the insurrections were not patriots, they had come to stop the peaceful transfer of power, to overstep the will of the people,” Biden said.
His remarks signaled tensions with the Supreme Court and shed light on his aim to politically target opponents.
