While Trump has fiercely attacked Mitch McConnell in the past, Trump’s gracious response to McConnell’s endorsement was seen as uncharacteristically conciliatory by some, given their history of attacks.
Others argued Trump is judged too harshly by some and too favorably by others.
“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for president of the United States,” McConnell said.
“It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support,” McConnell added.
“Thank you, Mitch. I look forward to working with you and a Republican Senate MAJORITY to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump wrote.
It remains unclear if Trump’s tone signals a deal with McConnell to show party unity before the 2024 RNC, or simply that judgments of Trump are often biased, as he has both endorsed and reversed stance on McConnell-backed candidates recently, displaying both antagonism and cooperation with the Senate leader.
The unusual graciousness from Trump left observers uncertain and debating his motives.
“Almost nobody judges Trump by the same standards as every other political figure, it seems. Either he can do no good or he can do no wrong,” X user Matt Smith wrote.
“I think that if you don’t see Trump as at least 20% good and at least 20% bad then you are biased.”
