Democratic Representative Adam Schiff was shouted down by pro-Palestinian protesters as he gave a victory speech after advancing in the California Senate primary election.

Schiff struggled to be heard over chants of “ceasefire now” from scattered protesters in the crowd.

“We are so lucky, so lucky to live in a democracy where we all have the right to protest. We are so lucky to live in that kind of democracy that we want to make sure that we keep this kind of democracy,” Schiff said before being interrupted.

While some were removed, others continued the chant, preventing Schiff from finishing his speech.

Progressive groups criticized Schiff for running ads targeting Republican opponent Steve Garvey, arguing it helped increase Garvey’s recognition and turnout of Trump voters, potentially impacting other close races that could determine control of Congress.

“Adam Schiff put his own selfishness above democracy by lifting up Republican Steve Garvey, who will now turn out Trump voters in key House races that could determine control of Congress,” progressive Adam Green said.

“Katie Porter faced a barrage of negative ads from billionaires and special interests, as Adam Schiff spent millions to prop up a pro-Trump Republican,” he said.

Garvey described the primary results as the “first game of a doubleheader,” looking ahead to the November general election.
