Tesla’s factory in Germany was left without power after arsonists calling themselves the Volcano Group set fire to a high-voltage power mast near the plant.

Over 60,000 local residents also lost power.

“The complete destruction of the Gigafactory and the lopping off of technofascists like ‘Elend’ Musk are a step on the path towards liberation from the patriarchy,” the group stated.

The attack is estimated to cost Tesla hundreds of millions in lost production of around 1,000 vehicles per day.

It could take several days to repair the damage. The saboteurs are part of a small group that has targeted infrastructure before to protest technology and capitalism.

“We currently do not expect to resume production this week,” the plant’s senior director Andre Thierig said.

Authorities say more needs to be done to protect critical infrastructure.

“We need to protect these objects just like we might with a military installation,” BSKI vice chairman Hans-Walter Borries said.

“We demonstratively stand with Tesla and will do everything in our power to prevent any further attacks,” Brandenburg industries minister Jörg Steinbach said.

It is the latest challenge for Tesla’s factory in Germany, which has also faced local opposition to expansion plans and reports of water pollution.

“Whether these issues will have an effect on the expansion of the plant I cannot say,” Thierig added.

The production halt may help Tesla reduce inventories of unsold vehicles in Europe.
