Scott Caan recalled his late father James Caan warning him against pursuing a career in Hollywood when he was younger, saying the business was “goofy” and to “stay away from it.”
However, Scott found his way into acting in his late teens and has had success in films like “Ocean’s Eleven” and shows such as “Hawaii Five-O.”
“Not until I was a late teen, like 18 or 19 years old,” Scott said. “I was always an athlete, and my old man told me that this business was goofy and [to] stay away from it.”

“I would do anything to not go to school, so I had all these different creative ideas,” he added. “Anything to not finish high school and go to college. I sort of got lucky and met a director and ended up on a set somehow.”
While James cautioned his son not to make work his entire life, Scott said his father also took the industry very seriously.
“He always just said, ‘Look, work’s not your life,’ and I think it’s a good lesson,” Scott said. “You gotta be passionate about what you do and love what you do, but, at the same time, it can’t be the most important thing. You’ll die in it.”
James won an Oscar for his iconic role in “The Godfather” and had a long, legendary career before passing away from heart issues in 2022 at age 82.
Scott is currently starring in the Fox series “Alert: Missing Persons Unit.”
