A viral social media post showed a $24 receipt from Five Guys burger restaurant, igniting debate about inflation and fast food prices.
The receipt included a bacon cheeseburger, soda, and small fries totaling over $21 before tip.
“Five Guys prices are out of control,” one X user wrote. “$24 for one person.”
“I guess I was expecting about $12 to $15 per person for Five Guys,” the X user said. “$22 (without tip) just seems to cross a line. What is the right amount these days?”
While some felt $5 for small fries and over $12 for a burger was “highway robbery,” others noted Five Guys has always positioned itself as a more premium fast food option.
“5 dollars for a small fry is highway robbery,” one user wrote. “It’s literally just a potato and some salt. Cost them a quarter to make.”
“I know a way to save $2.19 on that real quick,” another user said.
“You ain’t seen nothing yet. Wait until that $20 an hour minimum wage in California kicks in,” another wrote.
The post shed light on the way in which inflation has driven up food costs for many Americans, with beef and other items like fries significantly increased according to government data, while sparking disagreement over whether $24 for one person at Five Guys crossed a line.
