House Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green announced he is reversing his decision to retire from Congress.
Green had said earlier this month that he wanted to leave, believing the country and Congress were “broken.”
However, Green stated that since his announcement, he received many calls from constituents, colleagues, and former President Trump urging him to reconsider.
“I have come to realize our fight is not here within Washington, our fight is with Washington,” Green said. “As I have done my entire life, I will continue serving this country — but in a new capacity.”
“Since my announcement, I have received countless calls from constituents, colleagues, and President Trump urging me to reconsider.”
Green, a former military officer, said he was reminded of his “duty, honor, country” and realized he had a duty to fulfill to his country.
I was “reminded of the words of General McArthur on a statue at West Point: ‘Duty, honor, country.’ I realized once again: I had a duty to my country to fulfill.”
Trump praised Green’s work as Homeland Security chair on social media and endorsed him if he decides to run for re-election.
“Mark Green has had lots of options because of his political talents, and the great job he has done as a Congressman, but given the fantastic work he’s doing as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, I hope he runs for Re-Election to the U.S. House of Representatives. If he does, he has my Complete and Total Endorsement!” Trump wrote.
Green will now seek another term rather than retire as he had originally planned.
