Judge Aileen Cannon is expected to push back the trial date in the classified documents case against former President Trump brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

During a four-hour hearing, Smith argued for a July 8 trial start date, but Cannon called that “unreasonable” and hinted at a further delay.

Multiple criminal cases against Trump brought over a year before the 2024 election are facing hurdles.

Smith’s January 6 case relies on a novel legal theory for obstruction charges that is under Supreme Court review, and Trump has claimed presidential immunity that the high court will also consider.

A prosecutor with Jack Smith’s office said, “We’re in full compliance with that policy.”

Meanwhile, Fulton County DA Fani Willis faces disqualification from her RICO case against Trump due to accusations of lying about the timeline of her relationship with a special prosecutor hired for the case.

Legal experts express concern the cases may not reach resolution before the 2024 election.
