The United Auto Workers union has gained significant support at Mercedes-Benz’s Alabama plant, with over half of the employees signing union cards.

The union’s efforts aim to represent workers at foreign-owned auto plants in the South, where wages are lower and unions weaker.

“We’ve learned that we can’t trust Mercedes with our best interests,” Jeremy Kimbrell said. “There comes a time when enough is enough.”

“We had a fertile ground to spread the message, and, shoot, it took off.”

This move is crucial for the UAW’s long-term success and bargaining power.

“If a company has to tell a worker how good their job is, that definitely points to something being wrong,” he said.

The surge in interest follows a historic strike by the UAW against major auto companies last year.

The union is encouraged by the growing support not only at Mercedes but also at other plants in the region.

The union’s new president has led a more aggressive approach, resonating with workers seeking better wages and job security.
