The unmanned U.S. spacecraft Odysseus landed successfully on the moon in February 2024, the first American landing in over 50 years.
Launched on a SpaceX rocket, Odysseus experienced communications issues near the moon that briefly raised fears it had crashed, but it was confirmed by mission control to have landed safely.
While concerns remain about completing its objectives of imaging the lunar surface, the landing represents renewed lunar exploration through collaboration between NASA, SpaceX and Intuitive Machines, the private firms involved in the mission.
Intuitive Machines Chief Technology Tim Crain said, the spacecraft was “definitely on the moon and operating.”
