Electric vehicle sales in the US surpassed a million units last year, challenging the perception that only Democrats own electric vehicles.
Research shows that in several states, more Republicans and independents own electric vehicles than Democrats.
Factors influencing EV adoption include availability, charging infrastructure, and consumer awareness.
“Consistently, the number one reason that [these shoppers] cite is lack of charging station availability,” EV executive Stewart Stropp said.
While states like California lead in EV registrations, other states are catching up.
“We’re not finding universally that charging centers sell cars unless EVs are already on the mind of the consumer,” Center for Sustainable Energy senior principal advisor Brett Williams said.
“Some of the markets that had the richest soup of those ingredients got an early start,” Williams said. “We’re also seeing that things are really changing over time… That speaks to the fact that the economic and pollution benefits of electric vehicles don’t obey political boundaries.”
Political divides exist, with Republicans less likely to consider buying an electric vehicle compared to Democrats.
Market factors like infrastructure, incentives, and consumer awareness drive EV sales, indicating a changing landscape in the industry.
