American intelligence agencies have informed European allies that Russia may launch a nuclear weapon into orbit this year or deploy a harmless “dummy” warhead to create uncertainty.
There is division among U.S. intelligence on Putin’s intentions, with Russia denying any plans to weaponize space.
“We do not have any nuclear weapons deployed in space, or elements of nuclear weapons being used on satellites, or fields created to stop satellites working effectively,” defense minister Sergei K. Shoigu said.
“We don’t have any of that, and they know that we don’t, but they are still making noise,” he said.
“The reason why the West is making this noise consists of two things: first, to scare senators and congressmen, to extract funding supposedly not just for Ukraine, but also to counter Russia and to subject it to strategic defeat.”
“And second, in our view they would like to push us so clumsily into restarting a dialogue on strategic stability,” he said.
Concerns persist about potential space weapons and the impact on satellite systems.
The U.S. has low confidence in predicting Putin’s actions, suggesting a possible practice run in 2022.
Secretary of State Blinken warned China and India of the risks, urging influence on Russia.
Discussions on strategic stability have stalled since the invasion of Ukraine.
