President Biden’s team is pushing back against negative media coverage following the Robert Hur report, disputing claims that Biden “willfully” mishandled classified documents.
The White House Correspondent’s Association (WHCA) criticized the White House for using internal channels to critique news coverage.
Kelly O’Donnell, the president of the WHCA, said, “It is inappropriate for the White House to utilize internal pool distribution channels, primarily for logistics and the rapid sharing of need-to-know information, to disseminate generalized critiques of news coverage.”
The focus on Biden’s age and memory has been criticized by the Biden campaign, with complaints about the media’s coverage of Trump’s comments.
White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates posted, “Bolsters my theory that starting in 2019 some in the press began suffering from collective memory problems. Can’t remember their own coverage. Can’t remember even 1 of the historic Biden wins since then. Can’t remember that the rightwing age attacks they treat as novel are… old.”
Biden’s limited news conferences and interviews have also drawn attention, with comparisons to past presidents.
The White House has urged media scrutiny of House Republicans over an impeachment inquiry.
New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger said, “We are going to continue to report fully and fairly, not just on Donald Trump but also on President Joe Biden.”
“He is a historically unpopular incumbent and the oldest man to ever hold this office. We’ve reported on both of those realities extensively, and the White House has been extremely upset about it,” he continued.
Sulzberger explained, “They are different. But they are both true, and the public needs to know both those things. And if you are hyping up one side or downplaying the other, no side has a reason to trust you in the long run.”
