A federal lawsuit accuses five New York National Guard members and a contractor of sexually exploiting asylum seekers staying at a Quality Inn hotel housing migrants.
The suit alleges multiple instances of soldiers taking migrant women and teens from the hotel on promised “dates” and demanding or coercing sexual acts.
According to the lawuit, “The guests were (and remain) particularly vulnerable, given their uncertain immigration status, lack of mobility, need of basic supplies, and other needs.”
“Even a trip to a Walmart was considered a great gift,” the suit continued.
Specifically, Sgt. Deven Colon is accused of an inappropriate relationship with one woman including gifts and promises of help in exchange for sex.
He allegedly groped another teen’s daughter. Another soldier “Thomas” is accused of groping a teen.
Sgt. Deven Colon also allegedly texted, “I am just so lost and I need to find myself again. I don’t recognize the man I have become in these last few months.”
The National Guard was tasked with assisting over 175,000 migrants bussed to NY and housed them in hotels, creating opportunities for exploitation.
A spokesperson with the New York National Guard wrote in a statement, “If allegations are substantiated following an investigation – can result in adverse administrative and/or disciplinary actions pursuant to regulation and New York State Military Law.”
“Criminal activities are referred to law enforcement for appropriate action,” the statement continued.
The allegations are being investigated and could result in administrative or legal penalties.
The suit depicts a serious abuse of power and vulnerability of migrants.
