Wildlife officials are investigating the mysterious deaths of thousands of fish found floating in the Spokane River at Long Lake Dam in Spokane, Washington.
The affected fish were primarily walleye, perch, whitefish, and trout.
“We have no idea why this happened,” Spokane Riverkeeper waterkeeper Jule Schultz said. “What we do know is this appeared to be a very large event.”
Officials have ruled out low oxygen levels and are awaiting test results to determine the cause, possibly disease or contamination.
“[I] looked down the hill, and there were literally thousands of fish right along the shore there,” former Long Lake Dam employee Tom McClellan said.
“[It] certainly has never happened in the 10 years that I’ve been working for the Spokane Riverkeeper,” Schultz said.
The incident is particularly concerning due to efforts to reintroduce salmon into the river.
