Rudy Giuliani has appealed a $148 million jury verdict ordering him to pay damages to two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, whom he defamed following the 2020 election.

Giuliani spread false claims that the women engaged in voter fraud. At trial, they testified about facing threats and harassment due to Giuliani’s accusations.

“We very much appreciate the judge’s expeditious consideration of this matter and look forward to proceeding accordingly,” political adviser Ted Goodman said.

Though found liable by default for failing to provide discovery, Giuliani continued denying wrongdoing.

After the verdict, he filed for bankruptcy and renewed his motion arguing the statements were opinion and expert testimony was inadmissible.

“The Court should have stricken the testimony and instructed the jury to disregard it. Based on this error, the jury returned an exorbitant damages award for reputation injury based on expert testimony that should not have been admitted,” Giuliani’s attorney Joseph Sibley wrote.

“The absurdity of the number really underscores the absurdity of the entire proceeding,” Giuliani said.

His appeal comes after the bankruptcy judge approved payment from third parties to represent him, as Giuliani cannot use his own assets due to the case and other suits against him, including from Dominion and Smartmatic over election fraud claims.

It remains unclear if Freeman and Moss will recover damages as the largest creditors in Giuliani’s bankruptcy.
