Finland has reported that thousands of third-country migrants are waiting to cross the border from Russia, leading to concerns about a potential threat to society.
The closure of border crossings last year due to the influx of migrants without valid documents has strained relations between Helsinki and Moscow.
Finnish authorities anticipate more illegal crossings as temperatures rise with the onset of spring.
“We have information that thousands of people on the Russian side are waiting to get to Finland,” Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said.
The government is planning to introduce legislation to enhance border security and counter Moscow’s alleged use of migration as a pressure tactic.
