Jon Stewart criticized Tucker Carlson’s interview with Vladimir Putin on his show, mocking Carlson’s demeanor and expressions during the exchange.
Stewart also attacked Carlson for praising aspects of Russia like clean train stations and affordable groceries while ignoring lower wages in Russia.
Stewart said, “It’s not really a straight face so much as you try to convey a mixture of what appears to be shame, arousal and I’m gonna say irregularity.”
“For instance, like you’re constipated while [expletive] to a Sears catalogue,” joked the host.
“I know I’ve said this before: You’re such a [expletive],” charged Stewart.
“Really, truly, like a [expletive],” he repeated.
“And it will radicalize you ― unless you understand basic economics. See, $104 for groceries sounds like a great bargain unless you realize Russians earn less than $200 a week,” said Stewart.
“But here’s the reality. You [expletive] know all this because you aren’t as dumb as your face would have us believe.”
This criticism came after Stewart himself had been mocked for a previous episode where he dared to criticize President Biden’s apparent memory issues.
Stewart said, “This guy couldn’t remember stuff during his deposition. Do you understand what that means? He had no ability to recall very basic things under questioning. The footage of the president unable to recall simple facts must have been brutal to watch.”
Many viewers who had been excited for Stewart’s return were disappointed that he criticized a left-wing figure like Biden, believing commentary should stick to one partisan side.
“Seriously disappointing. His ‘comeback’ was hyped up for this take?” wrote a commenter.
“And the laziest of humor at best,” wrote another user.
“Jon Stewart complaining that 2024 is ‘two old guys’ again is like me complaining that it’s ‘two white guys’ again. It misses the point and minimizes the stakes,” added a third X user.
