Former US Representative George Santos has filed a lawsuit against late night host Jimmy Kimmel, ABC and Disney alleging copyright infringement and deceptive practices.
The suit says Kimmel submitted over a dozen fake requests on Cameo, pretending to be individuals and businesses seeking personalized videos from Santos.
Unbeknownst to Santos, the videos were then played on Kimmel’s show to ridicule him.
One video had Santos congratulating a fake beef eating contest winner.
The suit says this violated Santos’ copyright and Kimmel misrepresented himself to induce Santos.
Robert Fantone, an attorney for Santos, wrote in an email, “Frankly, Kimmel’s fake requests were funny, but what he did was clear violation of copyright law.”
It seeks $750,000 in statutory damages for the five videos used.
Santos faces criminal charges for alleged fraud, lying to Congress and misusing campaign funds. He had previously pleaded not guilty to revised charges.
