CPAC, the largest annual gathering of American conservatives, was set to take place this week in Maryland featuring former President Donald Trump and international leaders.

However, several anti-Trump conservatives planned a counter-summit called the Principles First Summit to unite “pro-democracy, anti-Trump” figures like George Conway and Adam Kinzinger.

Meanwhile, CPAC chairman Matt Schlapp expected strong turnout and described CPAC as conservatives rejecting globalist forums like the World Economic Forum in favor of supporting national sovereignty and independence for countries.

He also stressed Trump’s understanding that grassroots support is needed to advance the conservative agenda.

Schlapp said, “We’re Wexit. [The] World Economic Forum exit. Let’s put pressure on companies to not deal with these people. Let’s put pressure on our politicians to not play footsie with these people.”

He continued, “We’re people who love people across the globe. We just believe in America as a nation is a unique thing. We’re nationalists. We want to support our nation.”

Schlapp added, And by the way, all these world leaders who are coming over, they’re not asking for money. They’re not asking for us to do anything other than let them solve their problems and help them be independent of these globalists who probably are the ones who caused the problems.”

The dual events thus highlighted ongoing divides within the conservative movement.
