The death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in prison, while unsurprising given Putin’s history of killing critics, underscores the criminal and authoritarian nature of the Russian regime.

Navalny sacrificed his freedom and life to expose the corruption and wealth amassed by Putin and the Kremlin.

However, he posed little threat at the ballot box.

His real offense was continuing to produce exposes of graft from exile. Putin saw this as intolerable.

While some in the West view Putin as a strong nationalist, his rule has brutalized and impoverished Russia.

Steve Bannon, Trump’s former consigliere, said, “Every member of Conservative Inc that backs this Ukraine war is a simp.”

Tucker Carlso suggested, “I think we should probably take the side of Russia if we have to choose between Russia and Ukraine.”

Dinesh D’Souza said, “Putin – unlike someone else we know – LOVES his country & FIGHTS for its interests.”

He maintains popularity through constant conflict and repression.

Removing Putin is necessary for Russia’s return to democracy and civil society, but the country must also reckon with its past of violence and aggression enabled by many Russians’ support of Putin’s cruelty.

Defeating Russia in Ukraine requires continued economic and military support from Western allies to help Ukraine mobilize forces on the scale needed to withstand Russia’s war of attrition.
