Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is calling on President Joe Biden to grant clemency to nonviolent cannabis offenders in federal prisons, emphasizing the need to correct the failures of the country’s approach to marijuana.
Tyson highlighted the disparity between legal cannabis sales and the incarceration of thousands for cannabis offenses, particularly affecting people of color.
“President Biden has the power to effect real change – he can right these wrongs and grant clemency to those who are sitting in prison for cannabis offenses,” Tyson said. “We know the failed war on drugs was wrong and no one should be sitting in jail for cannabis. It’s time our country moves forward and end cannabis prohibition once and for all.”
While Biden cannot pardon these offenders directly, Tyson urged him to pressure states to take action.
The letter to Biden underscored the need to end the war on marijuana and addressed the injustices faced by communities impacted by drug policies, advocating for a new era of peace and prosperity.
“The war on marijuana is over, Mr President, as seen in legalization efforts across the country and in polls showing that most Americans oppose marijuana prohibition,” Tyson wrote. “Through a categorical clemency grant you can declare an end to federal warfare on our own people and mark a new era based on peace and prosperity.”
“Another Mexican goes to prison and leaves his little girl behind,” Michigan resident Danny Trevino’s mother, Berta Garcia, said of her son’s incarceration in 2019. “This is such an injustice.”
