A British bulk carrier, the Rubymar, was hit by two missiles fired by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the Red Sea off Yemen.

The crew abandoned ship due to significant damage, with the Houthis claiming responsibility for the attack.

“During the operation, we made sure that the ship’s crew exited safely,” Houthi spokesman Ameen Hayyan wrote on X.

The crew was rescued by the U.S.-led Red Sea Coalition, and the vessel was left at anchor.

The attack followed U.S. airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen.

“Vessel at anchor and all crew are safe. Military authorities remain on scene to provide assistance,” the Royal Navy said.

“CENTCOM identified the anti-ship cruise missiles, unmanned underwater vessel and the unmanned surface vessel in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and determined they presented an imminent threat to U.S. Navy ships and merchant vessels in the region,” U.S. Central Command stated.

The Houthis have targeted international shipping in the Red Sea as part of their military activities, expanding their list of targets to include American and British ships.
