A Justice Department special counsel has indicted former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov for allegedly lying about Joe Biden and Hunter Biden’s involvement with Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
Smirnov claimed Ukrainian Burisma executives told him in 2015-2016 that Hunter was brought onto the board to protect the company from problems through his father Joe, and that they paid $5 million each to Joe and Hunter Biden.
However, the indictment says Smirnov was only in contact with the executives after Joe Biden’s time as vice president ended in 2017.
This is a blow to the Republican-led House impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden, which had cited Smirnov, but Republicans say their broad investigation is not reliant on Smirnov and will continue.
Smirnov claimed in 2016, that Hunter Biden was involved “to protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems.”
The indictment raises questions about why the FBI did not previously verify Smirnov’s claims contained in an FBI form.
Rep. James Comer wrote, “had this form for years and it appears they did nothing to verify the troubling claims contained within the record until Congress became aware of and demanded access to them.”
