A transgender activist and atheist, Cecilia Gentili, had a funeral mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, causing controversy.
The Cathedral leadership felt deceived as they were unaware of the deceased’s beliefs.
“The Cathedral only knew that family and friends were requesting a funeral mass for a Catholic, and had no idea our welcome and prayer would be degraded in such a sacrilegious and deceptive way,” cathedral rector Fr. Enrique Salvo said.
The funeral was criticized for not aligning with Catholic beliefs on redemption and salvation.
The issue was not her transgender identity but the lack of alignment with Catholic funeral prayers.
Gentili’s vocal atheism and rejection of divine forgiveness clashed with the purpose of a Catholic funeral.
The incident sparked debate on the essence of a funeral mass and the importance of aligning beliefs with the ceremony’s purpose.
